A Beautiful Day to Fall into Infinity

A Beautiful Day To Fall Into Infinity  The day started sunny and without fear. All five of us girls bumping along in Isabella’s jeep down the dirt road. English and Spanish being tossed around the car, as well as snacks from trader joes. House music floated from the car stereo, passing through my heart and out into the sky. I'm thinking I'll be young forever, with my friends I feel so alive. A sharp halt and we arrive, my friends hop out like cheetahs- powering down the trail, my sheep legs falling behind.  finally, reaching the waterfall, how it towered over all of us! I dip my foot in, toss my head back, cool water rushing under my feet, Isabella grabs me- ”make sure you don't fall in ''. My friends think it's a good idea to hike to the very, tippy top, my stomach wrapped in knots. I'm breathing beyond my body, but this is where I'm meant to be. After struggling up to the waterfall crest, the people below look so tiny, my friends have already jumped i...

The Ophelia Archetype

Image
Savannah Villar-Beach Dr. Allyson Williams Nineteenth-Century European Art 20 April 2021 The Ophelia Archetype: Creating and Breaking  The piece I have chosen for my research paper is Ophelia, painted by Sir John Everett Millais in 1851-2. This piece is one of the most well-known artworks from Britain and speaks to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood mission, of which Millais was one of the founders. You may find this artwork now in the Tate Britain Gallery in London, England. The first of the two articles I will be analyzing is Pre-Raphaelite Painting and the Medieval Woman written by Erin Frisch in April 2013. The second is Ophelia and Victorian Visual Culture: Representing Body Politics in the Nineteenth Century By Kimberly Rhodes in 2017. I chose this work of art because I have always liked looking through the art of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood since I was young, although I had never learned deeply of the history and missions of the art group. I also think the Victorian ti...

In Every Moment We Are Being Saved~ Bone Healing

In Every Moment We Are Being Saved  There I was in all my glory, finally got to the toilet seat all on my own, when a charity group walked straight into my hospital room. Unaware of what's going on they begin singing and giving me their condolences and I am just sitting there, completely horrified and embarrassed as I try to politely kick them out of my hospital room. This was a common experience in the trauma wing. It was very difficult to have privacy during my 8 days in the hospital, needing assistance for everything, even moving from my left side body to the right. And at 19 years old, being told you’ll be in a wheelchair, then a walker and then limping for the next 9 months isn't the most uplifting healing process. However, given the circumstances of my accident, I was nothing less than grateful and in a different state of peace than I ever have been before.  In March 2019, I fell down a powerful 60-foot waterfall and luckily landed straight on my ass (rather than my ...

Street Art by Eastlakes Very Own

Image
Extra Credit Blog :) Joey and Hunters Tag                     Even in Eastlake you can find great street art, by locals. :)                 In Eastlakes' famous " Tunnels" where many teenagers go to hang out and be somewhere just a fence hop away from constant supervision there is the tunnel and surrounding forest area. The first image is the entrance of the tunnels, where graffiti artists have their tags sprayed with vibrant colors and perhaps their names; Roxy, Marisol (if it is their names, the artists are female) signed 2017. Also, the note on the left wall I found ironic that it was a message to the youth to appreciate meaningful graffiti, and instead they spay painted a dick over it. There were lots of CV Empire tags, claiming their territory over the area.              So, then I hopped into the tunnel and began walking through it. Its pitch black ...

Blog Number 3 !         At the San Diego Museum of Art, behind me are Amida Buddha, 17th century Japan, wood (right), Amida buddha with a raised lotus(left) and Flying Apsaras 17th century Japan, wood (top). These are all part of the permanent East Asia collection. In this section of the museum, it s set up with each art piece that shares a common trait is grouped together in the room. This room I gathered was the sculptures of the divine, with a sculpture of a Chinese boddhi visa across from these. These sculptures just took me back, they're so beautiful and handcrafted and the fact that they were made so long ago and I am able to appreciate them in person is so crazy i was in awe! Also, the content of the art themselves, so naturally peaceful and true. I also liked how the curator placed the Apsara, celestial being floating over the two Amida Buddha's. I also will always remember this day until I die I think because it was one of the favorite days of my life, ...

Savannah Villar-Beach Bullock Art 14 March 2017 Street Art Blog!!                   Hidden in the back-alleys in Ocean Beach are beautiful murals by local street artists. This one I found was next to the ride aid, located on the back wall of a local store down one of the most popular streets, Newport Street. The reason I was drawn to this one out of all the beautiful murals in O.B is because most portray the beach life and vibes of the town. I love all the bright colors, and paintings of mermaids but this one appeared more interesting and personal, it connects the viewers and artists in a surreal way. The unknown human face depicted in the center, with its third eye and other selfs blossoming outward convey an inner self experience, proclaiming so much beauty and creativity is vested inside our souls, there is no need for outward validation, or fulfillment. I believe the artist is tr...

Savannah Villar-Beach Feb. 17 2017 NASTY WOMEN & BAD HOMBRES         I believe having an art exhibit comprised of solely faculty members is very inspiring and influential for students at Southwestern, and other visitors such as myself. Art is both personal and something we want to share with others(most of the time). It allows us to express our individuality and also relate to others. For example, the piece Untitled by Bernadette Mingus; I believe the material is ceramic and she has composed an everyday scene of a woman's personal life into something beautiful, by putting the tiny red and white pieces into a mosaic. A student who was working the gallery noted how diligent Mingus was while crafting this, a dedicated perfectionist. I was attracted to the piece for its unique look- vintage but with bold colors, it gave me an Italian or Latin feeling. Also, the subject matter drew me in because I feel I am always looking at a woman's life as art...
