NASTY WOMEN & BAD HOMBRES

I believe having an art exhibit comprised of solely faculty members is very inspiring and
influential for students at Southwestern, and other visitors such as myself. Art is both personal and
something we want to share with others(most of the time). It allows us to express our individuality and also relate to others. For example, the piece Untitled by Bernadette Mingus; I believe the material is ceramic and she has composed an everyday scene of a woman's personal life into something beautiful, by putting the tiny red and white pieces into a mosaic. A student who was working the gallery noted how diligent Mingus was while crafting this, a dedicated perfectionist. I was attracted to the piece for its unique look- vintage but with bold colors, it gave me an Italian or Latin feeling. Also, the subject matter drew me in because I feel I am always looking at a woman's life as art, beautiful and intricate. This art piece highlights pieces of clothing made for women, noting gender roles; although I feel not in a political way, simply beautifying an everyday image. This piece highlights the contrasts of a woman's life in public; put-together and professional, and at home where the bra and high heels are taken off and one may relax. The next piece,Tower of Power by Grace Gray Adams was my favorite of the exhibition and it had a whole separate room, allowing me to get very personal with the art piece. The artist chose to create 7 nightstands dedicated to her 7 decades of life and seven women whom she finds very inspiring and moving. Each nightstand is extremely unique, a reflection of each woman and their art style and little symbols and pictures of their personal lives. For example, the nightstand dedicated to Hildegard von Bingen, a christian mystic, writer, composer and philosopher had sage,a cross, and candles in place of a night lamp(1098-1179). This piece is beautiful, because you get to interact with it and learn a little of these creative women's lives.
