At the San Diego Museum of Art, behind me are Amida Buddha, 17th century Japan, wood (right), Amida buddha with a raised lotus(left) and Flying Apsaras 17th century Japan, wood (top). These are all part of the permanent East Asia collection. In this section of the museum, it s set up with each art piece that shares a common trait is grouped together in the room. This room I gathered was the sculptures of the divine, with a sculpture of a Chinese boddhi visa across from these. These sculptures just took me back, they're so beautiful and handcrafted and the fact that they were made so long ago and I am able to appreciate them in person is so crazy i was in awe! Also, the content of the art themselves, so naturally peaceful and true. I also liked how the curator placed the Apsara, celestial being floating over the two Amida Buddha's. I also will always remember this day until I die I think because it was one of the favorite days of my life, I felt in a very calm, present head space so I also just felt even more inspired and connected to these art pieces, and the whole art museum. I felt like all the pieces were just all in communication with me, spreading their energy through the museum and through me. Apsaras in Japanese culture are normally depicted floating, playing musical instruments in graceful poses, praising the gods. They are also depicted surrounding Buddhist paintings, temples and sculptures. The Amida Buddha is the principal buddha of Pure Land Buddhism, which relates to one of my favorite contemporary pieces; Pure Land by Mariko Mori. I very much like the mindset that all can and deserve to achieve peace, serenity and enlightenment. I understand them, with the closed eyes and calm and mindful body postures, aware and alive through their souls. The Buddha has grown into someone who no longer desires or seeks fulfillment through exterior means. These pieces go together nicely in their presentation of Japanese Buddhism in the 17th century, the use of natural materials (maybe painted but very old so we shall not know), and intricate details and meaning and symbolism all resonated well inside of me.
