Street Art Blog!!

                  Hidden in the back-alleys in Ocean Beach are beautiful murals by local street artists. This one I found was next to the ride aid, located on the back wall of a local store down one of the most popular streets, Newport Street. The reason I was drawn to this one out of all the beautiful murals in O.B is because most portray the beach life and vibes of the town. I love all the bright colors, and paintings of mermaids but this one appeared more interesting and personal, it connects the viewers and artists in a surreal way. The unknown human face depicted in the center, with its third eye and other selfs blossoming outward convey an inner self experience, proclaiming so much beauty and creativity is vested inside our souls, there is no need for outward validation, or fulfillment. I believe the artist is trying to share that what we see with our eyes, is just a sliver of what IS and so much can be solved and discovered by dissociating from exterior things once in awhile (or however much you like) and viewing yourself as an essence, as a part of our connected universe. This image can relate to the atmosphere of Ocean Beach, where you can find many people experimenting with psychedelics, and just in general people seem to be more laid back and open to mind-expanding theories. Other murals highlighted the sense of community in O.B, employed rainbow colors and peace signs, proving the town is very friendly for artists.  When my friends and I parked to take this picture, one of the guys chilling with his friends in his car next to us said he was the painter of the mural behind this one. He said he knew the owner of the store and that's how he got the commission, perhaps that's how this person got commissioned theirs. Unfortunately, they didn't leave a signature. I believe it was created for the artist to create an image of how he feels his brain is flowing and entering a new mindset. Also, it serves as a reminder for viewers to never abandon their inner self, and for those who have never experienced such a trip that completely different dynamics and levels exist inside of them. In that way, everyone is the intended audience.

In Every Moment We Are Being Saved  There I was in all my glory, finally got to the toilet seat all on my own, when a charity group walked straight into my hospital room. Unaware of what's going on they begin singing and giving me their condolences and I am just sitting there, completely horrified and embarrassed as I try to politely kick them out of my hospital room. This was a common experience in the trauma wing. It was very difficult to have privacy during my 8 days in the hospital, needing assistance for everything, even moving from my left side body to the right. Blog Number 3 !         At the San Diego Museum of Art, behind me are Amida Buddha, 17th century Japan, wood (right), Amida buddha with a raised lotus(left) and Flying Apsaras 17th century Japan, wood (top). These are all part of the permanent East Asia collection. In this section of the museum, it s set up with each art piece that shares a common trait is grouped together in the room. This room I gathered was the sculptures of the divine, with a sculpture of a Chinese boddhi visa across from these. These sculptures just took me back, they're so beautiful and handcrafted and the fact that they were made so long ago and I am able to appreciate them in person is so crazy i was in awe! Also, the content of the art themselves, so naturally peaceful and true. I also liked how the curator placed the Apsara, celestial being floating over the two Amida Buddha's. The Ophelia Archetype

Savannah Villar-Beach Dr. Allyson Williams Nineteenth-Century European Art 20 April 2021 The Ophelia Archetype: Creating and Breaking  The piece I have chosen for my research paper is Ophelia, painted by Sir John Everett Millais in 1851-2. This piece is one of the most well-known artworks from Britain and speaks to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood mission, of which Millais was one of the founders. You may find this artwork now in the Tate Britain Gallery in London, England. The first of the two articles I will be analyzing is Pre-Raphaelite Painting and the Medieval Woman written by Erin Frisch in April 2013. The second is Ophelia and Victorian Visual Culture: Representing Body Politics in the Nineteenth Century By Kimberly Rhodes in 2017.
